Countdown to Christmas: Day 5
Day 5: I'm trying to get better at the discipline of sketching daily. Adding color to a sketch is always an additional feat, but today I was able to sit for a few hours to do a color sketch of the Christmas tree in our living room. My cat, Sozey, was an obliging model. After painting, I realized that the chair Sozey is in looks like it's missing its back legs due to the angle I was seeing...something I would fix in a do-over. Also, my original sketch needed some atmosphere, so in Photoshop, I created a sepia color layer surrounding the tree to make it appear to glow.
And yes, our tree really does look like the Charlie Browniest of trees. It's been our tradition to cut our own un-manicured trees while visiting my parents farm in West Virginia over Thanksgiving break. Even though my dad often replants new trees on the farm, I usually feel guilty about chopping them, so I pick a tree that looks like it might croak in a few weeks or one that's getting crowded out by others, thus we end up with one that has issues, like wonky trunks and premature balding. We swaddle the trunk in wet towels (Linus style) and load it in our Subaru for the long haul back to Philly..."all it needs is a little love."
